Squarespace Website Design

I design websites using Squarespace. Here you can find out more about Squarespace, key website terminology and core additional costs (domain name and website hosting) associated with owning a website. If you are new to the world of website design, this technical jargon buster should give you a good basic overview.

  • QUICK SUMMARY

In simple terms your domain name is the name of your website, e.g. the domain name of this website is: reindeermossdesign.co.uk You need to pay an annual subscription for your domain name from a domain registrar. This can be done easily via Squarespace and I can provide guidance. Your domain name subscription can also be set to auto-renew each year for peace of mind. A domain name annual subscription may be in the region of £10-£20.

    General info about domain names

    • You need to buy or rather pay for a subscription each year for a domain name from a domain registrar.

    • You essentially rent the domain name for a year, then must renew to pay and keep the name each subsequent year.

    • If you don’t renew your domain name each year, the name becomes available on the domain name market and is open to being bought by someone else - like houses, this virtual ‘real estate’ can be rented by another person or organisation. You can set your domain name to auto-renew each year with the domain hosting company so that you don’t need to worry.

    Choosing a domain name

    • Standard practice is to select a domain name which matches the name of your business.

    • The .co.uk part is called the extension, there are other extensions such as .com or .org.uk. Some people buy multiple extensions to protect their domain name.

    • It is important to not assume that the domain name you’d like is available. Somebody else may have already bought it, in which case you will have to think of a suitable alternative.

How do I buy/subscribe for a domain name?

You can purchase your domain name from any of the many domain registrar companies. If you already have a domain name, it can be linked to your new Squarespace website or transferred.

If this is your first website and/or you need a new domain name, Squarespace provide domain name registration as part of their one-stop-shop. I can provide guidance before launch.

  • QUICK SUMMARY

You need to pay a subscription for your website to be hosted on a server each year. If you choose my website design service, your website hosting needs to be with Squarespace and I can provide guidance in setting this up. It’s a simple online subscription which again, can be set to auto-renew each year so there’s nothing further to worry about once set up.

    What is website hosting?

Once your website is built it needs to be stored on a computer server. The organisations which possess and manage these very large servers are referred to as hosts. Website hosting is a separate service/cost to Website design.

How do I buy/subscribe for website hosting?

As I use Squarespace to build your website, it is necessary for your website hosting to be provided by Squarespace. I can provide support/guidance to complete this simple online payment to Squarespace just before launch. You can also set this to auto-renew each year so once this step is complete you don’t need to worry about it.

  • QUICK SUMMARY

SEO is all about helping your potential clients or audiences find your website on the internet. One of the ways ranking on search engines can be improved is by strategic placement of key words/phrases within your website. A beautifully crafted website is purposeless if it doesn’t appear on internet search results.

    What does SEO stand for?

The acronym SEO which you will come across in the world of website design refers to: Search Engine Optimisation. The search engine part refers to Google or other platforms that people use to search for things on the internet. The optimisation part is about getting your website as high up on internet search results as possible. One of the ways this is achieved is by the strategic use of key words/phrases - both visible and non-visible throughout your website.

Why do I need to know about this?

    • When selecting a website designer it is important that SEO is included in the design and build. SEO involves your designer putting in key text/phrases in the background of your website.

    • Your designer will also be able to advise and/or help you with structuring the content of the visible text on your website as this is also has an impact on search engine results.

  • QUICK SUMMARY

Squarespace is a one-stop-shop for creating and managing websites. You can make quick and easy edits to your website and keep your domain name and website hosting subscriptions all in the same place.

    What is Squarespace?

Squarespace is a well established Content Management System (CMS), in other words, an online platform for creating, publishing and maintaining a website. It is designed for independents and small businesses, offering a simple and versatile interface with multiple benefits to yourself as the ultimate website owner.

    Benefits of Squarespace:

    • the ability for you to make simple website edits, such as adding or editing a sentence without fear of 'breaking' the website

    • keep everything in one place: buy your domain name and website hosting subscriptions within Squarespace

    • easily create new blog posts - a practice which can keep you in touch with your client base/intended audiences with industry info and points of view whilst helping with SEO

    • email support from Squarespace once your website is handed over to you

  • QUICK SUMMARY

Website design is the service that I provide, that is the visual design, structuring and strategic placement of text (SEO), images and other media to create a functional website which aims to attract and engage relevant clients and audiences. Your core website design is a one-off fee.

What happens to my website when the design is complete?

Once I have designed and built your site I transfer ownership of your website to you - I can walk you through setting up your own Squarespace account for the transfer - nothing to worry about, it’s straightforward and will allow you to make quick edits as needed without additional design costs (if you wish). Additional annual website costs i.e. domain name and website hosting are paid directly to your service provider(s) - in the case of website hosting this will definitely be Squarespace.

What If I want to make changes/add more pages to my website in the future?

I would be happy to hear from you. Any requests for feasible additional work would receive a fresh quote.
